Joachim Kühn: Échappée –
Joachim Kühn receives the German Record Critics‘ Quarterly Award
For Joachim Kühn’s double album, the genre description ‘jazz’ seems almost too narrow. Kühn works with material from a variety of sources, his improvisation is very close to what was called ‘fantasising’ in older music. ‘Échappée’ is an astonishing masterpiece, recorded in Kühn’s own studio, matured over months, rehearsed, discarded, improved. Everything you can expect from him can be experienced here: Polyphony; tense swirls of sound, elastic dynamics, high temperature, pausing thoughtfulness and a serene preference for the beauty of the unpredictable. For the jury: Hans-Jürgen Linke
